Education, Outreach and Collaboration
Naugatuck Discovery proudly presents community and family awareness programs during our Parent Toolbox series held approximately 4 times a year, professional development opportunities for preschool and kindergarten teachers held bi-monthly throughout the year, the completion of the Transition to Kindergarten Plan implemented by the Board of Education in May of 2010 and the addition of our teacher resource lending library in the fall of 2011.
With great success, Naugatuck Discovery is entering its 3rd year of our preschool/kindergarten endeavor. We have developed a peer mentor program that enables both preschool and kindergarten teachers to work collaboratively with each other for the school year and hold peer visits to each other’s classes for a day of observation. Peer visits are now approved for twice a year and will be taking place in the fall and spring to enable teachers to see growth over time in the children.
Discovery is working with the Naugatuck public schools to help better align the preschool and kindergarten curriculum as examples of implementation for preschools. Discovery seeks representation from all kindergarten teachers, preschool teachers and early childhood programs in town. Professional Development is offered free of charge. Certificates of attendance will be issued to all participants.
Discovery will also be forming a lending library of teacher resources such as literacy materials, hands on center ideas, Leap Frog and TAG Literacy centers. These materials will be lent out to teachers for the use of reinforcement of skills, and class activities.
